About JLSFRC

Our Mission

The Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center provides resources, advocacy, help and education for all islanders to be healthy, safe and productive.

Our Vision

We are a welcoming community where respect for human dignity means needs are met, and all have opportunities to contribute, thrive and reach their true potential.

Cultural Belief Statements

These are the beliefs that drive how our team does business:

History

Since 1998, the Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center, formerly known as the San Juan Island Family Resource Center, has served as a welcoming and accessible place where over 2,800 islanders per year receive resources, advocacy, help and education. The Resource Center was initially founded by Joyce L. Sobel to provide our community with quality early childhood support programs such as youth mentoring, parenting classes, and parent-child playgroups that help optimize child development and family well-being. Over the years, our services have expanded to include assistance with many of the basic necessities of life such as emergency rental and utilities assistance, transportation, mental health counseling and access to medical care. JLSFRC’s ultimate goal is that every islander has what they need to be healthy, safe and productive.

Land Use Acknowledgment

We respectfully acknowledge that the Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Coast Salish people who have resided on and stewarded the resources of San Juan Island since time immemorial. We strive to honor their inherent rights and the dignity of all islanders.

Garden

JLSFRC’s gardens look different from most – a profusion of blooms in the warm months, and dried plant stalks and seed pods throughout the winter.  Our gardens were conceived as a place for rarely grown native perennials, plants of cultural significance for the indigenous peoples of the Salish Sea, and plants typically grown in settler gardens: a growing representation of our collective humanness and the others in our natural world.  Our garden has its own distinct life stages, just as we do: growth, flowering, dormancy, decline and renewal are all parts of the natural life cycle that we acknowledge and respect. If you spot a particular plant that brings you joy, let us know – we’re happy to share seeds and plant starts as they are available.

The Kinship Garden was designed by Jenny Harris from Catkin Horticultural Arts.
