You’re Not Alone: Support for Kinship Caregivers in San Juan County

Are you raising a child of a family member or close friend? You’re not alone — and support is here for you.

Across our islands, more and more grandparents, relatives, and close family friends are stepping in to raise children when parents are unable to do so. It’s an act of love — but it can also come with challenges, from navigating legal questions to managing unexpected financial or emotional responsibilities.

That’s where Opportunity Council’s Kinship Navigation and Kinship Caregiver Support Programs come in.

What These Programs Offer

Kinship caregivers can access one-on-one help and resources designed specifically for their needs, including:
👩‍👧 Legal, financial, and basic needs assistance — to help stabilize your household and access the resources your family needs.
💬 Guidance from experienced navigators — caring professionals who understand the unique challenges of kinship care and can help you find the right support.
🏡 Connections to community and peer support — including local caregiver groups where you can share experiences, ask questions, and find encouragement.

Why This Matters

Kinship caregivers are the backbone of family resilience — keeping children connected to their roots and community while providing love and stability during times of transition. These programs exist to ensure that caregivers don’t have to navigate the journey alone.
